I am nowhere near figuring out what 26D is. It is unclued.

Any hint will be appreciated.

I have 1d as a reference material.
I have not been able to parse 41a but if Gypsy is the definition, then it can give an A or I or O at the end.
41. Gypsy is cross across in Golden State (7)

Only one word fits at 1a, I can guess other unclued answers but it does not offer me much for 26D.

in cal goes inside zo ( a cross animal yak or similar)...gice zincalo for the gypsy.

I now have ?E?D?O?D as crossers for 26D.
But it does not offer any words that work from A2Z word finder.

Found the word and see why six times.

I have completed the grid along with the unclued lights but the headword defeats me and I cannot yet find it in the grid. A hint - eg number of letters or start area for the diagonal would be appreciated otherwise I must battle on searching in the haystack

It's 4 letters and starts on 32d going SE
