You've had some great replies and I can't top them - as the years roll by we amass not just physical books of all sorts of references but websites galore with lists of all sorts and everything.

Yes of course there may be a gap here and there or an obsolete word that hasn't stuck in a particular thesaurus but the hunt to find it is great fun and part of the solving process.

Our best resource though is the one between our ears, use it or lose it.

Good luck with your research.

Thank you oded for trying to find out if there is a gap.

I concur with others on the thrill one feels when one's search leads one to the answer.

What would help me most is a English-Scottish dictionary. I reside outside UK where no Scottish words are used.

There may be a dictionary out there but I am not aware of it.
I do go to glosbe, com but most of the time the word the setter has used is not in it.

By using some of the tools mentioned by seamus and the Chambers crossword dictionary, I have managed.

It would not be productive for you to come up with one for a few solvers like me who have to spend some extra time to find the answer.

Sunray

Chambers scots dictionary is what you need - I think the latest edition is a few years old but it should do the trick.

...however
my favourite source for Scottish words is a 1916 edition (an heirloom from my grandmother) of Robert Burns political works, with a large glossary . The coloured illustrations are a bonus

Thank you jazzgirl. I have bookmarked it.

Thank you zozozo. I will see if my local discount bookstore has Chambers Scots Dictionary. Otherwise Amazon.

This weekend IQ, Listener or EV will provide an opportunity to use the website indicated by jazzgirl.

If you are looking for a Scots dictionary this download (95MB!!) is very useful, especially for afficionados of the Wee Stinker.
