It was the fact that I 'd thought "appearance money" was a fee paid to a celebrity for appearing at an event?

A "someone" or a "somebody" can also mean "an important person" (Chambers )

No, no...... it was the " turns up for it" that threw me..,....as though it were a "casual" appearance
