I see what you mean, Seamus. Have already posted off this week's entry with the latter word, alphabetically, having never come across the former. Sod's law, I'll no doubt have picked the wrong one!

There was a similar situation in December 2015 when the answer to one clue could have been either DONNER or DANCER. I emailed The Herald to ask and was told that either answer would be accepted. I will do the same again today and see what they say this time.

For those still in doubt, I just got an email back from The Herald and either SCOT or SCAT will be accepted as answers for 20D!
