Hands up everyone who thought the answer to 2d was FANON. It works perfectly, and held me up for ages until I realised why I couldn't solve 1a.

Dryden, thanks for all the explanations - seems like my guess work is second to none. Though I do think one or two of these are a little obtuse, and as for 2 letter answers.......... . Ionacarr, due to a momentary bout of dyslexia I had 26D as SESAMES, which caused me no end of problems for an hour or two!!!

Finally filled the grid and filled in most of the spaces, although at least two can have more than one choice. Got the description, but am totally baffled as to what to highlight. Is it symmetrical, is it Latin? Where does one start? All the extra letters spell out nonsense, and are not symmetrical either. Can anyone help?

It's French and in a sort of circle (to start with at least)

The title of the puzzle is a clue. The Timea is one of the places you find it!

Or perhaps more accurately an unfinished circle or horseshoe

Not too hard for Big S, but a bit unfair on those of us who get the puzzle online and never see the paper itself. Luckily it didn't matter apart from checking the final stage.

Thanks djawhufc, although at first it didn't help much. It was only when I experimented with the penultimate row that I saw it. (I had four wrong letters added in). After that the rest fell into place nicely.

A very, very difficult, clever, frustrating, irritating and rewarding puzzle. Thanks ever so much Schadenfreude, and thanks once again djawhufc.

Completed and highlighted but cannot get 6 down. Cannot parse either option. Only been doing the crossword for a couple of months and have managed most but this seemed quite tricky.
