I've been cooking, so haven't read the comments until now - thanks everyone.

To me "blocking" is the bit inside, so the French marshal should be inside the road. I couldn't pronounce RNEYD though!

The way I see it is that Ney is blocking/confining Rd
Thesaurus shows blocking and confining/containing as synonyms, so I have no problem with the clue

Mmmm - I'm not seeing blocking and containing as synonyms at all. Oh well, let's move on.

Merry Christmas to all RTers!

Sorry, but I still don't like have as a synonym for encounter.
I don't like 5d either- surely this is an abdominal organ.

OK, rant over. Merry Christmas, everyone!

Thanks elle.
I can see how papal fits, so I have had to rethink 2d. I had 'Open Door', but I can see an alternative word instead of open, which fits ?A?N, and fits the clue better.
