Hi mattrom.
Re my clue @ 32, here it's a reverse substitution with this being the important indicator showing which is the required answer (it's quite common in thematic crosswords regardless of the device being used).
Definition: Position
Queen = Qu
Check = ch
Quarter => charter (a concession)
Surface reads as a chess situation.

Hi again mattrom, I couldn't post from copy and paste without editting and I accidentally omitted the combination of this and may lead to as I used here or the like.

Thanks to all who contributed and it's good to see theambler again. I chose a word with many synonyms but which could be difficult to parse. I'm always impressed by your ingenuity.

Equal runners up are BBM2@7, dorrien@16 (wish it was true), FJ@18 and ginge@32 (also liked Roentgen's)
Tatters - you are in the hot seat again for your entry #37

Lack of support for Joe Montana on the fourth.

Congratulations! Your prize is about a different beast from the same country

Thanks mattrom and congrats, tatters. I was going to say that your choice of quarterback dates you a bit, but then I realised that I would be pushed to name many more recent ones (are there a couple called Manning?)

Thanks mattrom. Well done tatters.

Can someone parse the winner for me, please? (Sorry, not a game I understand!)

Steve
Joe Montana was a very successful QUARTER(back) for the San Francisco Fortyniners (I think!)

Hi Stevea, I took it as a double definition.
Joe Montana was a quarterback, minus back (support)
the fourth = 1/4
For the surface read, the game is played in four quarters, so the fourth could refer to the fourth quarter.
Hope I got it right!
