I've come to the same conclusion.
Full grid - but I'm never very good at keeping track of the generated extra letters - I have:

LO A E EL E W E

Given my omissions and mistakes is this what I think it could be?

Yes, to the H.

Crackabilly, the obvious answer is the correct one. You can add the H and the other missing one, and dump a couple of Es.

As always I am bringing up the rear with this. I am stuck on just one clue - 24 across: "Cardinal behind strangeness of Jock's Dart of Pain." I have tried every letter of the alphabet for the unchecked one but cannot find anything which makes sense. Any heavy hints would be more than welcome.

I'm hopeless at hints...so Sten is what you need. It's a Scottish word,in Chambers.
