I'm agreeing with Pkd : RAF would be an abbreviation and should be mentioned in the preamble. Solving 7D doesn't help as the original and final entries both begin CH.

I've completed all the clued entries, though don't see how my entry (the author of the reported remark) fits 'French coot'. Any offers ?

Thanks Pkd, though I haven't been able to find confirmation. The ven author, B***, is a translation of 'comic strip' or 'cartoon'. N*** doesn't translate at all. Maybe I have an error in the other 3 letters ?

I've parsed it as wager (lay) E (first letter of egg) which gives a different answer to the ven author

I see now. I'd assumed that 23 would be Bede, the author of the speaker's remark, but was probably falling into a trap. For anyone else getting into the same difficulty, just change the 3rd letter.

meursault, it is possible to make an "angle or angli" from 7d, as is the same with the other word with clashes. This word, which you don't enter, confirms 12a.

Cannot seem to parse 24a, even though I know the letter to omit, and the answer. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks djawhufc. I kept looking at s and o inside hitn, which of course doesn't make sense. Anyway, all finished, so can get on with housework now. A nice puzzle, thanks Raffles.
