Thanks again syzygy, a standard as you say but enjoyable nevertheless. I particularly liked 16a as I didn't think it stuck out as an obvious straight anagram as so many do. (a)7 also raised a smile.

Thank you syzygy.
Is it possible for you to post this earlier in the month. Even though I live in Canada fairly close to NY there is no way I can do the puzzle and submit it by 5 August.

@Farr

Unfortunately, I'm dependent on when the magazine is delivered to the library. As you may have seen, last month was ridiculous, considering it is published around the 15th.
e.g. August issue ~ July 15.

Try your local library. If they don't carry it, urge them to.
Also, they might subscribe to Zinio, an online magazine carrier. All you need is a library card.
Our system dropped Harper's at Zinio 3 years ago, so no luck there.

If you're successful, let us know.

Thanks, Syzygy, enjoyed. Liked j.(6) and c.(7).

Thanks, syzzie. That was fun. Liked 6-letter k and 7-letter a and c. I don't quite get how to extract the two e's from "everyone"; I assume that "very on" is removed but don't see how. I do see "great mess" and have the right answer but the rest bewilders me.

7e had me puzzled too, but something in the way you phrased it gave me instant illumination.

E(very on)E
'very on' turning into (becoming) the anagram of 'great',
something like BEST --> BENT - partial clue: "reverses direction".

I hope that's clear.
