Thanks, Syzygy.
Another one that looked impossible at first but then fell into place. Started with 44/38 and worked my way north. I found 34 the most difficult and is my favourite.

You're welcome.

It was a challenge. Was stuck on last two. Finally saw 43 & misspelled it; the old "I before E, except after C , except for ..." Fixing that got me 37.
Whew ! Maltby's upped the ante. Good.

Stars: 14, 21, 23, 34, 35, 41, 54.

Nice one Syzygy,
Got about 18 solves, finished most of the left hand side. I agree 35 is a clever clue but not got 34 yet.
also liked 8, 23, 32 and 38*
I'll soldier on tomoz, goodnight.

PS Syzzie et al: I'll get the grids to you tomorrow now that I'm back earlier than previously planned,

Is 46 a proper noun, please? I have fy in it, so it looks as if it is included in the clue.

Have done about half now but the centre and top right are completely blank.
Please could soneone give me a hint re 40?
It's very odd, isn't it? I had no trouble at all with 35, which I agree is a good clue. But it took me ages to see 41, which is pretty obvious.
Must go wield my chain saw.

Hi Rosalind,
40 is a Latin word. The private is of the military kind.
You've probably worked out 46 by now, but it's not a proper noun and yes, it is in the clue

Penny dropped on 46! never heard of the word, but that's quite clever.
I like 50

Thanks, syzzie. As usual, charming clues. I too loved "personal computer".

rosalind: A starring role in "The Oxford Chainsaw Massacre"? I'm having a little trouble with the visual.
