Read the clue as:
His father is an "uncle"
Answer=son
Are we sweating a bad clue?

Ah ... if I am male and my father is an uncle, that means either he or his wife (my mother) has a sibling with a child. Therefore I am a nephew to that sibling.
Phew ... complicated for my little brain.
Will now stop sweating. Thanks!

Sorry to come back to this so late in the day ........are we going with pop, pawn , uncle..... or is there some deeper meaning we are all missing?....still cannot work out "nephew"
What paper is this from - is there an official "blog" for it?

It is an old clue that has appeared at other times over the years with not even a hint of a decent explanation - not that I could find anyway.

Guardian Cryptic 22136 by Rufus 19th Feb 2001
FT 14939 by Dante 26th May 2015 etc

Just looks like a dodgy clue to me but that leaves me surprised to find it repeated

Thanks, Tatters.
Yes, you are right...it is strange that the clue has been reproduced, yet with no satisfactory explanation to be found!
Ah well......

Rufus is probably the easiest Guardian setter to crack.
So, it should not be too hard to solve...but it is!
