jogamel,I have only just got back to this and could do with some help.
Do you have answers for second or third clues down?

I have waragi (rag inside wai(t)) for the second down.

Yes. I stupidly had the four squares filled and thought that they had to move up. Now I realize that the four squares should have been initially empty and four letters moved down.

Is everyone else stuck or given up?

I initially put the last 2 acrosses in the bottom row and it wasn't till I realised they should be in the next row up that I managed to complete the puzzle!
