Hi, Ros, et al. Just looked in. I'll add my tuppence as well.
1) enter the answers that have the correct number of letters.
2) for answers that are too long:
........ enter what you can, according to crosses.
........ write the full word in the white space on the side &
........ underline the two letter pair that would fit in the square occupied by a letter from a regular answer.
........ it's always the same pair, which is symbolic of something well-known.
3) highlight the crossing letter in the regular answer.
4) read the highlighted letters left to right across the grid, giving a 7-letter word.
That should lead you to a common adage, especially if you use a yellow highlighter. (-;
