Hi trevor, certainly no need to apologise, we're both only trying to help ros and hopefully she'll look back in.

Hi, Ros, et al. Just looked in. I'll add my tuppence as well.

1) enter the answers that have the correct number of letters.
2) for answers that are too long:
........ enter what you can, according to crosses.
........ write the full word in the white space on the side &
........ underline the two letter pair that would fit in the square occupied by a letter from a regular answer.
........ it's always the same pair, which is symbolic of something well-known.
3) highlight the crossing letter in the regular answer.
4) read the highlighted letters left to right across the grid, giving a 7-letter word.

That should lead you to a common adage, especially if you use a yellow highlighter. (-;

I hope that, & a hot toddy, will help. Take care.

I've now finished except for 44 ac, even after reading all the comments!
I know what the word is and the phrase (very clever). Is 25 down an anagram? I thought it was, but get the wrong letter to start the word.

Well done, Rosalind.

44A - replace the first letter (last letter from 28D) with the Symbolic pair. Definition is the first word.

25D - it's an anagram. If your first letter is wrong, perhaps you have an error in 24A.

24A - read "buff" as a serious fan, enclosing R for "run".
