Thanks syzygy, easy even by Harper's standards but enjoyable nevertheless. The 15 letter answers were too obvious and only aallowing1 orientation made things a lot easier although I had to Google C 22 to confirm parsing.

Thanks, Syzygy, enjoyed. I really liked 6 and 24.
I'm embarrassed to say 28 was my last in!

Thanks, syzzie. Quite enjoyable, but is there a mistake in 19? I read "Rosebud, e.g." as SLED, which would be DELS when brought up, whereas the answer I have ends with DLES. Am I missing something?

My favorite is 24.

@ aristo: you're spot on, I didn't want to mention/spoil until all regulars got a chance. My overall impression was the clues were not as polished as usual and it seemed put together quickly in comparison with otjer puzzles. If so, that would explain this "blip".

nearly gave up on this, damn answers just wouldn't come. got there finally, spent quite a while pondering 19 - not knowing rosebud/sled connection - never watched the whole film - it didn't occur to me that it might be an error given the setters track record.
is the pound in 6 from a keyboard?

Hi Trevor just different terminology, the # was pre internet days the pound and the mnumber sign over the pond and still is in places. If you scroll to the text in the wiki link below it mentions, if you can be bothered going through all the bumpf.
