Hi Trevor
I'm not making much sense of my 'transformations'. For 35a I have ha?t and can only think of hart being a change from a young to a fully grown deer. For 17 ac I have illi?io? so assume it's illision but why? Can you help me on this one please.

Hi farr, do you have 10a yet? It explains the transformations. As usual it's anagrams. Illusion is correct and if you think of another word (originally French) and see the 2 possible anagrams the full theme should become apparent, ie 10a.
Hope this helps.

I must be more dense than usual this pm. Illusion which makes sense can't be right if 3d is mnemic which must be right. What anagrams are you talking about? And what about 35a h?rt.

Quite literally it's as given by 10a, anagram States (as in USA).
