............or I could put it much more simply: a "fabulous creature" is never in the proper sense of the word "allegorical"!!!

GK,sorry- my answer was written on the assumption that a crossword clue/answer triggered this discussion. I think 'allegorical' was an answer in one of the weekend puzzles.

For what other reason would the question be posed on a crossword forum?

Malone. Yes. You are correct, it was related to a W/E puzzle. I was trying to avoid spoiling. I had another gripe with the same puzzle. I don't see 'stent' and 'spare' being synonymous. You don't have a stent from birth. I'm aware of the phrase 'spare part surgery', but still not happy with the clue. I'm just becoming an old curmudgeon, as Columbine keeps saying. ;-)

The 'stent' there was stent(1) in Chambers, 'same as stint(1)' = 'to allot stingily; to spare'.

Harlequin, I'm glad I wasn't imagining the premise for the discussion! I think crossword answers sometimes stretch meanings somewhat, but there's usually justification (sometimes very small) for this.
