Am I right in believing that only some clues in italics give partial answers?

Hi truron, all 4 clues in italics provide part answers of words each defined (a synonym) by the 4 unclueds. 5 39 explain the "relationship" between what is provided by the italics and the full word.

I think there was a problem with an online version of this crossword - it had too many italicised clues!

Ah, that probably explains truron's post. The 4 italicised clues are 1, 4, 25 & 30 down.
