Thanks you so much guys - a few really good ideas- but like you, can't see how they'd parse. I'll put them to him when he wakes up - and we'll see...

Apparently not. It was ancient which I'd suggested to him, but he said was wrong. His clues won't be worrying the established setters yet. Thanks for your help.

The clues he revealed thanks to all yr help for which many thanks:

Experiment in High Catholicism: laboratory. (Me: "Why is High Lab?" Him: "No idea.")

Model model, model music: Melody - yes you were right! But as for the y ....
(Me: "Why is model why?" Him: "A model of the Y chromosome.") Huh?

Sounds like your mobile has been hacked in the hall: Symphony. Good clue, I think? (Provided you know he refers to the hall in Birmingham, which being a Brummie, he can't help.)

Blue rinse set in set on: Eton. It's in there, Eton blue is a shade, so maybe blue rinse ... hmm...

And the one he's convinced is like the Enigmatist would set:
My rhapsody that little Charlie fibbed over his options: Kaleidoscope.
Why? Well: apparently Charlie is Cow in Scotland (IS IT?) which sounds like Ka a bit. Lied sounds like Leid. His options could be o levels so os. Cope - did he even explain this? Can't remember.

Enigmatist challenger?

I love you to judge.
(And still have others to solve then a blank 17 x 12 grid with no dark squares into which to fit them, in I know not what way, because the clues aren't numbered, once I've guessed: a person (5,6), a place (11,4), a film (8,2,5), a show (2,10,2,6,5) and a work of art (8,2,4) - all of which are apparently based on the answers to the top twelve clues.)

Tormented? Yes. Frustrated? Yes. Entertained? Hmm.....

rusty you outdid him: As I said he thought y could be a model of a y chromosome to give melody. Neither of us knew about the model Y Ford. Respect!

Thanks Seamus - will try these on him. And please tell me, if you know, is Cow really a nickname for Charles up there? Charlie, yes. Cow? Never heard of it.

Hello, Jazzlover!
I am in Scotland and have not heard of a cow being Charlie up here.
But we have many cattle from the Charolais breed?

On the west coast, Cal is short for Calum. I've never heard of it being used as a short version of Charles.
