Help needed please. 38a: farmhands from Black Country (7) I have B??E?E?. This might help me a bit but I am still in the dark.

I'm not great at hints...Byremen, farmhands.

...You didn't mention that there may be an extra or a missing letter. There's one in 38 A.

Jogamel, I mentioned it only in case the answer puzzled other solvers, those without the paper.

I know. I was actually annoyed with myself because I had thought of the answer earlier....and talked myself out of it!

Oh dear. Am I the only one having problems with this? I have almost finished the normal clues and I think I have the hint, a 12 letter word p............y. I can see that some of the themed answers may be names and the middle 7 letter one looks like a rank, but I cannot see how they match up with the thematic clues, let alone what p..........y has to do with it. Can anyone give me a hint with the thematic clues to get me started please.

I didn't do the 12 letter word and I've no longer got the paper. There are plenty of names and they have something in common. The middle seven one was a great help - put it in front of a four letter word, the same went for a five-letter unclued down in the bottom left (if I remember the position correctly!). They are all ????? - you wouldn't want too many of them.

Thanks malone. That was a great help and I have now managed to finish the grid - and see the significance of the 12 letter hint! I've had to give up on the thematic clues though. I can only parse a few of them.
