Thanks everyone - especially pkd and keepatit. I have just about finished - just a couple of clues still to parse. Glad to help if anyone needs it.

Trying not to look at the comments - it's really not that difficult. The postmistress at Poolewe post office said that she'd save me a paper on Saturday, for me to pick up on Monday morning. But she forgot. Can anyone please help with a scan of the blank puzzle ? meursaults_friend@yahoo.co.uk.

I've just noticed what I think is an error in the puzzle. In 1 dn the definition is the final word in the clue less one letter. But this refers to the second definition in Chambers, whilst the spelling used in the puzzle is specifically referred only to the first definition in Chambers. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I think you're right, Escuan. I wondered about this too.

I've no doubt it's a mistake, and it's been mentioned at length on another website. But there can be real doubt about the answer, so best not let it detract from a challenging set of clues and a fine puzzle

The 1D entry did hold me up for quite some time, on account of the mismatch of variant spelling to definition. But if the point has already been made on another site, I'll just say that otherwise the puzzle was quite challenging (in terms of identifying the extra and missing letters) and the core of the trap was neatly done.
