Thanks Malone, I looked under B, Roman and Numeral, but I suppose three-hundred was an obvious place to look, d'oh!

I'd got the original answer from Chambers and when I looked in Bradford's today, I tried B, numbers, numerals, Roman... and then three, followed by three-hundred.

In these situations I always google 'medieval roman numerals'.
Only because I know from previous puzzles that the IQ often uses these.

I am just back from the big smoke so missed your last posts. Can I just say to all of you joining me in these pleas for help how very much I enjoy your company? And thank you from an (improving I hope) student of this art.
