Oh, and Syzzie, all new systems are hell, especially library and hospital ones.
In Oxford they decided to put everyone's records on the computer, sacking lots of porters (obviously no longer needed to carry notes around) to pay for it. But many consultants wouldn't play, so now there are not enough porters to move the patients because they are still moving notes........

Pardon the late reply. I've been busy sorting out problems caused by the new system.

You are all welcome. It was more of a logic problem than a crossword, as Aristo explained.

i'll have you know - i packed in the smoking, it was slowing down my drinking too much.
i'm unsure of the answers to 30 and 44 but as they're not really necessary i just left it (44 is one of the 'variant spellings').

it's 44 that i didn't do (anag of empire). cheers for other one, litner was my guess just from having all the letters, linter seems obvious now Lint being what it is.

Thanks syzygy, a different but very well constructed puzzle with the usual smooth clueing even if the format required a few "uncommon" answers.
