Hi mondrian
5 is a word for underground explosives inside a (pretty obscure) fish, meaning "glow"

8 isn't very good. It's a short name for a boy inside a (pink) paper, abbreviated

16a is similar, only it's a full boys name this time. "caught" is also included, and the word for "work" is a bit archaic.

Lovely day here too - golf this morning (and tomorrow, and the day after............)

Thanks chrise. It is a relief to know the clues in question are 'obscure' or 'not very good'. That lets me off the hook,

Hope you have good golfing days!

Mondrian,

I was stuck on those three too:

5d: Def'n is GLOW, think specific explosive devices rather than materials.

8a: Def'n is DEFY and the newspaper is pink.

16a: Def'n BENDY (n), 'in work' - think taxi drivers, 'caught' - a common crossword abbrv'n

Cheers A-P
