felicity,

46. You are looking for the name of a duck. e.g. Mallard.
try lists of ducks and look for one with a W in.

Have looked at nursery rhymes for 24 but found 2 possible answers. One would be O -- B-----. The other would be B -- W -----
Do either of these seem right to you?

Done that Betty and found an answer but cannot find the cryptic part matches the answer.
The second one of your answers looks right although you need 6 letters in the second word.

felicity, thanks for your help. I meant to put 6 letters in that second word so glad to have it verified.

As to your query - if you've found the right duck ( begins with W ) then the same word also means old fool.

Couldn't believe how easy 27 was after putting the puzzle away as Winnie suggested! Think about aeroplanes!

Still unable to think of anything really suitable for 54 though!
