Wow! What a great selection of clues – so many possible winners. All really deserve a mention, but I don’t want to write an essay, so I’ll just comment on my shortlist. Thanks to all contributors, and sorry for those I have passed over.
Heathcliff @2 (once it was explained to me!
Chiaroscuro @3 – loved the “cardinals” for NEWS
Bbm2 @4 (and jws @16) for getting some many newspaper titles in (and presaging the prize!)
GK @8 – good construction of the word
Ixion @7 – ingenious construction and sly reference to the papers’ eventually use in the chippie
Paul @15 – good anagram and concealed definition; not a pleasant image, though!
Theambler @ 24 (and 25) – nice anagram
Les40 @26 – double duty (in a good way) for “new”
BBM2 @31 – clever subtractive anagram
Nice to hear from imagcq again – all well with you now?

OK, decision time. Not easy, but my favourite is:
Chiaroscuro @3
ID required after cardinals make the press? (10)

Your prize (which most of you were probably expecting):

Thanks again to everyone for taking part.

Well done, chiaroscuro; Cardinals was a nice touch.

Thanks to chrise for hosting.

And sorry to chrise for not checking the thread and realising there was a query re my effort. This is becoming a habit as that is two weeks in a row. Many thanks to aristophanes and les40 for parsing the clue. I appreciate your assistance, chaps.

I guessed that would be the clip and it is from one of my favourite all time programmes. Despite being funny I was slightly critical of it at the time as it is an old joke (Lenny Henry, Tracey Ullman and David Copperfield did it previously on Three of a Kind/) and it was the only old joke I knew of that Yes Prime Minister used. Yes Minister/Yes Prime Minister constitute some of the best television ever produced, IMHO, and I felt they didn't need to use an old gag with a classic feedline from Sir Humphrey to which Bernard would deliver the punchline, and that was obviously the way that scene was going. Nonetheless, it still makes me smile.

Thanks for that, heathcliff. I knew I had heard it before Yes Prime Minister, but I couldn't place it.
