I would hazard a guess Mattrom, that even refreshing the screen brings a new set of ads, creating a piddling amount of income for the owners.

The more adverts that are viewed the more revenue is generated, if you have ad block installed your browser never requests the adverts so the advertiser knows that you haven't seen any adverts and thus doesn't pay for the pages you are looking at.

We are talking to our ad agency to see what we can do about some of the more intrusive adverts.

Hi Ash,
My view is that we all live in a world in which we are bombarded with advertising from morning to night, on the TV and in the papers where we are doing our crosswords. Yes, they can be a bit frustrating (except if they are the Brook Bond tea ads or Paul Whitehouse selling insurance) but over the years I've learned to take them on the chin.
If they serve to keep this great site cost free to users, that's fine by me!

Newspaper ads don't move about and the TV ones don't jump out on to the screen during a programme and cover up what you are watching!
I'd be perfectly happy if the advertising wasn't so intrusive.

Everything seems unbelievably slow at the moment, while we wait for the ads to load. I've checked it's not my firewall and anti-virus stuff. It's the speed that the site works at that is currently putting me off. I can handle the adverts provided they load up more quickly and that they don't intrude into the input screens.

Thank you, Ash and Busby for your explanations!
I would be quite happy to remove the Adblock from my computer were the adverts less intrusive - I just cannot cope with those that flash!
I'm sure everyone wants to cooperate as much as possible to keep the site cost free for users.

I hate the ads but love the site and so visit it just the same. I see the large ad at the top has disappeared this morning and that makes a big improvement for me because my broadband speed is slow, less than 2Mb/s.
I wouldn't pay a sub but would possibly give a donation. Would it help if we all spent 10 mins a week clicking on ads ? :-)
