Oh my goodness; I thought this would be a daunting answer to clue. I’m astounded by all these entries. What a great response! As other setters have remarked, it’s quite difficult to single out one entry among so many worthy ones.

I was hoping to see a mention of Kierkegaard, and the erudite high-flier obliged @4. OK, getting carried away. Anyway, I usually frown on anagrams, but have found that my frowning doesn’t affect them in the least, and am still impressed by perfect ones. And what could be more perfect than chiaroscuro’s clue @13:
