The intrusive ad problem disappeared from tinyurl very quickly.
Can we hope for that on this site ?

Nice puzzle, a bit more difficult than recent ones but as usual some lovely constructed clues with my favourites being 12, 15* & 48* across and 6 down. Thanks again syzygy.

Thanks, syzzie. Most enjoyable. Such a treat to do a puzzle that's challenging but doesn't require a dictionary or computer. Lots of goodies in this one; especially liked 34A and 1 and 32D.

You're welcome. Yes, quite a fun one. Bit of a NY ethnic theme again.

I appreciate clues with a smooth surface read, even if they're not all that tricky.

* A - 10, 19, 29, 46. D - 7, 10, 13, 32, 39.

I've found graph paper handy for this type of puzzle. Write the normal answer with the known coded letters below or above, as you work back & forth.

Re computers:
A long time 39D, I wrote a little spreadsheet for cryptograms. As you find a letter it is placed under the coded one & deleted from the list of available letters.
It doesn't solve the puzzle, of course; that would spoil the fun. Just an electronic pencil, & eraser if you need to make changes.

Will have to resurrect it. It would work well here.

Re ads: just got blasted with a full-page one for dog food.
Seriously considering moving all this to AnswerBank.

Needless to say, I haven't yet got either of Aristo's favourites, even though I have got 3 letters of 32 dn!
It is a fun to do crossword, though, thanks syzygy. Please don't leave here

Well, Aristo had 3 favourites.

34A was one of my last entries. Couldn't think of a native tribe that fit; there are thousands, but one is close. Rethinking the wordplay finally nailed it, as did the perimeter letters. Different kind of animal.

1A has a container.
"Status" follower - think of a 3-letter word that would make it a Latin phrase. [Chambers]
That word is holding the word ART.

32D:
Called [synonym for "phoned"]
up [reversal]
landlady, heartless [internal deletion]

21D is cute. Several wig-related clues lately in other puzzles.
