The Elephants are now at Whipsnade perhaps they have more space,Marwell is our local zoo the tigers were jying about in their pool the breed so well they are on the pill I have mixed feeling about zoos but seeing the baby pygmy hippo was a real ah moment.Nothing on this weekend so will do catch up in the house

A bit of a drizzly day but warmer!
I've been to Whipsnade but quite a long time ago now- before the elephants were transferred.
There was some controversy over why the elephants were moved.
The zoo authorities said that it was a long term plan to give them large pastures, but as the announcement came straight after one of the elephants had trampled a keeper to death, this was regarded with some suspicion!
I've walked the dog, done the Times Jumbo General Knowledge crossword and am shortly planning to watch the Athletics!
Family coming tomorrow !

Dull, drizzling but not cold (yet!)

Elle, it sounds as though you have had a very busy morning ! I've finished the concise, had a 'diagonal' look at the cryptic and decided brain was not with it yet!

Re the elephants - I would like to know what the keeper had done to the animal in the first place - elephants rarely do become nasty unless under threat, to protect their smalls, or ill-treated. In a zoo, I can only imagine the third possibility;

I am a bit like Doglet and don't really know what to make of zoos - I do not like the fact that the animals have been taken away from their natural environment (different climate as well, even though they are heated etc...) ; I do not like the fact that they are in a form of prison, albeit large - they are still behind bars/mesh wire with people staring at them, and I dislike the attitude of some visitors. Having said that, it is for most of us the only chance we have to see some species in the flesh. (I hate circus !)

MY newspaper only has the jumbo on it. I have seen tigers rhinno and elephants in india and there is no better way of seeing them,but man interferes and soon they will all be gone.We have sun at the moment but has just been pouring with rain

(I may have posted this before!)

I remember a cartoon with a zoo-keeper explaining to some visitors "We always like to keep animals in the closest we can get to their natural environments."

Behind him is a gnu in a cage with crossword puzzles on the wall.

Pigale, you might be interested in reading up about the Aspinall Foundation who are responsible for the zoo I mentioned earlier, Port Lympne Wild Animal Park in Hythe.
The Foundation specialises in the protection of endangered species and in the rehabilitation back into the wild , of o some of the animals it breeds, especially the gorillas.
It appears to do a very good job. Look up their website.
Btw... nicest part of the day here now, finally sunshining! but it's been pouring down for most of the time in Gateshead whilst I've been watching the Athletics.
