Jazzy, your humerous (and very well written!) comment about the Goldfish did not pass unnoticed by me - unfortunately as I said last night, I only joined the discussion later than most, because of watching a DVD.

Doglet, very good point about paintings indeed - Am I mistaken or was there a very talented faussaire (copyist)
who painted many master pieces from various artists, all extremely well done and following exactly the technique of said artist ? He never signed the works, but he still ended up in prison where he was allowed to paint (I think) - There was a British TV series where he explained all about the paint mixes etc... dealing with one painter each week. Cannot remember his name!

Elle, it is not the first time you and I agree on questions of language ! I had seen your comment too.

And (though I should not start a sentence with 'and'!), extending the topic a little more, can anyone imagine a musician composing the works of Beethoven, Motzart, Schubert, Smetana, Korsakov etc etc etc....

BTW Doglet, with our one hour difference with you, it gets dark a little earlier than you, but we still have light early in morning - around 6.30 I think.

Do you mean Tom Keating? He was jailed because his paintings were fakes they were not just in the style of,I dont know if he had his own style.There have been a lot of pictures just recently that have been copies much to the horror of the owners and auction houses.I am going to an art exhibition of wildlife and animal paintings but have promised my husband I wont buy anything,I know we have too many already but I bought a lino cut this year and discovered the painter was quite well known and his art works fetch quite a lot so my husband was mollified by my modest purchase.Weather cool but dry at least for the moment

That name rings a bell Doglet, but I am not entirely sure he is man I am talking about. I do not think he ever intended to earn huge amounts of money from his paintings, simply the guy was a genius, able to paint all the impressionist following their techniques - I have a feeling he found his pleasure in doing just that, (though he might have made some money in the process !)


Elle, I had forgotten about 'Becoming Jane' and have just ordered it from Amazon, together with a biography of Zola (I have read a good one in French but never saw any film) The DVD I've just bought is 'imported from Britain' !!! Can't find a French one - and cannot find any DVD on Victor Hugo, whatever the language; Mind you there is so much to say about his life that it would mean several DVDs for several periods of his life !

And the second leg obliges......a couple of times.

Ros, you are certainly most creative! Making cakes - I love the idea of the Jackson Pollock one - a rug for your grandson and the prospective S & L board! Have you made a start on that? I'm sure he is going to enjoy its being personalised!
I've never come across sequels to "Wind in the Willows" - I must look them up.
There were sequels to "Heidi" of course - and no one minded about those. But maybe that was because the two subsequent books were written very much in the style of Johanna Spyri? Whereas this new 'trend' is to make the books appear 'modern'.

I meant to say so! I just thought that there would have been more general response and discussion - as there has been this morning.

Doglet, how is your cat after the teeth cleaning? That was a very good point about the paintings! I hadn't considered that aspect of the Arts.

Speaking of Victor Hugo, I have a VERY (!) old copy of "Les Miserables" that I won as a school prize - I don't want to think how many years ago that was!!!

Elle, was 'Les Miserables' the original French version or was it a translation - because if it was in French and if you read it entirely, I must congratulate you ! It's a very big book, so is Notre-Dame de Paris ! have you read that as well?

You recommended Miss Potter and I enjoyed it - so there is no reason why I should not enjoy 'Becoming Jane'.

No, Pigale, it was in English! I can read French to a limited extent but would never be able to tackle a book of that length!
No, I haven't read "Notre Dame de Paris" but have read "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" - albeit an extremely long time ago.. .....around the time that I saw the film. The version with Anthony Quinn as Quasimodo. Did you see that?
