There are various stories about oil being poured on stormy seas in an effort to effect rescue from doomed ships.
Rosalind was saying earller that she came across this, too, when doing some research.
The theory seems to be that the surface tension of the oil calms the rough waves, like forming a thin skin across the surface.
There are many different versions of this phenomenon. I've read about Bede and about Pliny.....
I know very little about it, though, I'm afraid.
Like you, I think I'll go with Simon and Garfunkel's solution! I love that song!

So what happens if the person is too old or infirm to manhandle his/ her old machine to the outside of their property to await collection?
This must happen in quite a number of cases? and not everyone will have a suitable trolley on which to convey it?
It seems most unreasonable.
When I bought a new washing- machine, the delivery man not only removed the old machine from it's working position in the kitchen, but installed the new machine for me, and then demonstrated its working.
An excellent service , I thought!

I got my clothes washing machine from Boots.
They installed it, tested it, and took my old one away, though there may have been a charge for disposal.
I canny right mind, as we say up here.

The people delivering the dishwasher were the only ones who had one in stock,so we had to use them,Some delivery firms are very helpful but I think my review on Amazon will not be a good one.If they had been standard poodles I might have been tempted.I now have so much nonuseful information from my new book it is full of the esoteric and bizarre

How are you today?
It's a dull somewhat chilly day here; for the first time since summer began, I found it necessary to wear a lightweight fleece when I ventured out this morning.
No sign of the sun.
" Do no Harm" ? I've heard of that - didn't it win a literary award? I don't know anything about the content though - I'm assuming it's not a medical book about brain surgery , so what form does it take?
I have only just had breakfast on my return from the park - I actually got up late (not until 7 am! ) - this morning, so went straight out with the dog.
We have no plans as yet for today - take it as it comes.
Are you and Miss L-Plate going out for a bacon roll?

P. S. Rusty and Malone, I agree it a good idea to put the 'pike' word and various connotations behind us.
I have learnt from this, never to so much as even 'list ' as usage, a word about which I know nothing but have only heard spoken.... in future I will look up a word in the dictionary and find out its meaning and derivation before even referring to it!!

Yes, definitely, you should write up a critical review! because some one less able than yourselves could be "in quite a pickle" if they had to move a heavy machine on their own. They might even injure
themselves.
