In the puzzle there were one or two words that were new to me, too, Elle!
That's how we learn!

Yes, thank you, the family arrived safely home just after midday.
They had a good trip, relatively traffic free.
It is quiet here now......we shall miss them.
I wish that they lived nearer.
Did I mention that our eldest grandson ( 11 next month) is now two inches taller than I am?
I persevered with the crossword and completed it on the second time around, with only one parse outstanding.
2d: cat not wanting piano as musical instrument (3)
I have "uke" = musical instrument (def)
Presumably "puke" minus "p" for "piano"?
What does "puke" have to do with "cat"?

My copy of Chambers gives "vomit" as a meaning of "cat".
I'd think it should be in yours, too?

Yes, "vomit " is given in my Chambers too.... but I still cannot understand why "cat" should mean puke / vomit?
I looked it up in Brewers but could find no explanation?
There must be some reason for such a use of the word?
Younger daughter starts her new job tomorrow!

Ah! I see now what you mean by "cat/puke".
According to my Chambers "cat" is an Old English word for "vomit".
That appears to be the origin of the word.
It does not appear to be related to the feline "cat", but a completely different word, which is spelled the same, if that makes sense?

I think your younger daughter will be fine!

Just ignore my interpretation of "cat/vomit".
I think I am way wrong!
I think both "cats" have the same origin, but I would not put a shilling on it.

I like sausages!
I once had apricot sausages, when out to dinner........ unusual and delicious!
I give up on this cat / puke business....it just doesn't make any sense to me - whatever it says in the dictionary!
Yes, I am sure my daughter's first day will go well.
She was invited to the new firm's Summer party, as I think I mentioned -and so already has met some of her prospective colleagues.
She is looking forward to the future challenges.
Back to normal in the morning.....no grandchildren up as dawn breaks.....

I may try them one day.
Yes, best forgetting about "cat".
I had not come across that meaning before.
Similar to "priest" meaning "club for killing fish".
But I have no idea why.
