Hi, Rusty!
It was a pleasant walk...surprisingly mild...
I think we must have reached double figures?
A big change from this morning's 0C, when I first went out.
I haven't looked at the Loch webcam for a while.........
When do the ospreys return?
I love following their progress.
Obviously, Swedish surnames are more complicated than I thought!
I liked today's crossword; I actually managed to finish it and parsed everything!
My favourites were 3d, 9a,13a, 14a , 21d and 27a.
I am feeling hungry.... I must hasten dinner along.......
I think we shall eat earlier than usual tonight!

Hello, Elle!
A lot of the loch is frozen over and the ducks etc are in the clear parts.
Laddie arrived at the loch from Africa last year, on 17th March.
Lassie would have been a few days later, I think.
I think I shall investigate Swedish surnames.
Where have all the "-dotters" gone?
I suspect something has changed.
I do not get 27a, for ages.
I had not heard of DH Lawrence. I knew TE, though.
I had my tea earlier.
I have taken Lindsey Vonn to win the Super G tomorrow!

You are right. Dottir indicates 'daughter of' and sson indicates 'son of'.
In Iceland the surname of every child is based on this. The parent's first name is used as a prefix, so Herval's son has the surname Hervalsson and his daughter Hervalsdottir. This applies when the parents are married. If the parents are not married, the mother's name is used, so unmarried Helga's son has surname Helgasson and her daughter Helvasdottir. Therefore children don't have the same surname as their parents - or their different gender siblings. They also keep them after marriage.
This used to get tricky in the 1970s when married couples travelled abroad and wanted a shared room in a hotel but had passports with different surnames!
This was the case in the 1970s but may have changed now.
I believe that elsewhere in Scandinavian countries children inherit their father's surname.

Hello, Kenyatta!
A lot of good info there!
I have been investigating the Swedish and Norwegian surnames.
Apparently, in 1901, Sweden passed a law stating surnames would have to be hereditary and passed on to the next generations, rather than the patronymic names that were in use up to then.
Norway passed a similar law in 1923.
There are still an enormous amount of "son" suffixes but few "dottir" suffixes.
Wonder why?

Hi, Rusty!
Oh good, so not all that long before Lassie and Laddie's hopeful return.
I do hope that they both make it back to the loch.
I am surprised you had not heard of DH Lawrence....I know you do not like reading fiction....but I would have doubted that anyone of our age would not have heard of "Lady Chatterley's Lover"?
And DH Lawrence also wrote other well -known novels such as "Sons and Lovers", "Women in Love", and "The Rainbow".
There are others, but I think these would probably be ranked as the most famous?
Some very good films resulted , too, based on some of these books.
It was good of Kenyatta to offer additional info on our basic offerings about Swedish surnames..........
It is always good to learn something new.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for Lindsey tomorrow......
I had haddock for dinner!

Hello Rusty
I suppose the frivolous answer is that the 'dottirs' are descendants of long lines of unmarried feminist Mums!
On the other hand, as the Scandinavians take the father's surname, most fathers are sons!

Hello, Elle!
Be good to see the birds back!
Hopepully the loch will be unfrozen by then!
There is a vague hint of recognition regarding the name, DH Lawrence.
But, that is all.
I have heard of "Lady Chatterley's Lover" but I do not think she would be the kind of person I would take to, given her reputation, and I do not know who wrote about her/him, so I would not read about their antics.
Give me good old Miss Peckwitt tales any day!
Yes, some excellent info from Kenyatta.
I was going to do Lara Gut tomorrow, but not sure if she has recovered from knocking the photographers up in the air yet, so I'm going with Lindsey!
Eve Muirhead and team play Denmark in the curling, too.
I think they will win.

Hello, Kenyatta!
I have read a bit about Nordic history in the 19th century and there were "dottirs" everywhere!
Seem to be a dying species!
Must be to do with the laws that were brought in.

Hi, Rusty!
This seems to have been a very short week......
Weekend is round again tomorrow!
You are meeting up with your granddaughters , aren't you?
Will that be tomorrow morning ...or Sunday?
You may need to record sporting events around your social activities!
I am finding that whilst I usually remember to record what I hope to watch........actually catching up, and watching said recording is another matter!
I have finally put to rest several weeks of "Casualty"!
I am now up-to-date!
Is Lara fit enough to compete tomorrow?
That looked some crash when I watched the video clip.
Time for a coffee.....
Unfortunately, we have now finished the delicious Christmas cake that was in the Christmas hamper from our son......!

Hello, Elle!
I am meeting Miss La Bamba on Sunday.
Miss O is at Paris.
Yes, it is tricky with the Olympics taking place in the early hours.
I think Lara will be OK to start.
The Swiss Miss is quite a tough cookie!
Yes, Lara got a right clatter, but better flattening the photographers than hitting the trees!
Most of the Alpine skiers are carrying knocks etc., including Lindsey Vonn.
It's just the nature of the sport.
Falls can and do happen.
I just hope the wind does not spoil the event.
