Though the faithful might go to heaven, so it would become the "anad o' the leal" I've found online "loyal, faithful, honest, true" - presumably a corruption of "loyal". That works for this clue; still a bit of a jump that they are necessarily heaven-bound, though!

The only Bill Bryson book I have read is "Notes From a Small Island".
I enjoyed that.

If you enjoyed Bill Bryson's book, I have a suggestion for you.
There is one he wrote called "Walkabout".
It is two books in one, (an omnibus?)
Anyway, the books are "Down Under", and "A Walk in the Woods".
They are very good indeed (and are on Amazon for 1p!).
Down Under is his travels around and across Australia.
A Walk in the Woods is about his walk on the Appalachian Trail in America. (And he visits Dolly's home town, Pigeon Forge, on the trail!)
I recommend them.
Lots to learn in them, and very funny.

JG, I love Doc Martin as well. Though I can't believe anyone is as stupid as Penhale!

There are "very good" copies of "Walkabout" on eBay, from World of Books etc.
May be slightly dearer on Amazon, but if your account is on the up, why not!
I learned a lot from Down Under, and chuckled a lot, too.
Learned what a "Jackie Howe" is, and who Jackie Howe was.
The meaning of "she'll be apples!", and how they managed to lose a Prime Minister etc.
I like Bill Bryson!
And parts of "A Walk in the Woods" are hilarious!
They made a film of it with Nick Nolte and Robert Redford but I do not know if it was any good or not.
The book is always better!
