Hi, Rusty!
No, "sphairistike" is a new word for me, too!
You are certainly a man of surprises!
Wherever/ however did you come across such a word?
I have looked in Chambers, but it is not there?
Now, speaking of tennis......
Novak is first on Centre Court, playing at 12pm
Jo is third on, should you want to watch her?
Btw, did you ever decide to place a bet on Jamie Murray and Martina Hingis in the Mixed Doubles?
They are playing in the Third Round RIGHT NOW on Court no 2 !
It is interesting that Le Tour is passing the Lascaux Caves, which bear paintings....
I wonder will there be any mention of them?
(or of Anne B's "prints"?)

Hello Elle and Rusty!

Sorry for not replying to your post earlier Rusty - I had switched
my computer off early last night because of thunderstorm - there
is always a risk around here of sudden power cuts, which is not so
good for computers.

I have just read an article where they explain that the organisers
have planed the route and decided on a slight detour specially
designed to include the Grottes de Lascaux, so I expect there
will be at least some explanations, and perhaps a glimpse of
the new artificial copy of the original grottes due to be officially
opened later on this year - I think. They may well show pictures
of the original.

Decidedly fresher here today after last night,s thunder (I am glad
to say we were on the edge of what must have been a nasty
storm somewhere not too far!)

Hope you enjoy your tennis Elle!

Hello, Elle!
I got the info on "sphairistike" from Oxford English Dictionaries.
I follow them on Twitter and get Tweets from them regularly.
"Sphairistike" is on page 1499 of my 11th Edition of Chambers Dictionary.
"Sphairistike, the name under which lawn tennis was patented in 1874 by Walter Wingfield, and by which it was quite widely known for a time".
So....
I have looked up Paddy P's site for odds on Hingis+Murray winning the doubles but there is no book on it.
Just odds for each match.
Yes, looking forward to seeing something about the Lascaux Caves!
All helps with my education!

sphairistike is one of 500 words missing from the 13th edition of Chambers. My inherited 1912 Chambers shows
sphaeristerium : a tennis court (Gr. sphaira, a ball)

Good day, Pigale!
Good news about Le Tour and the Caves.
Must be some co-operation between them?
With millions watching the race, it will be good publicity for the Caves (if they need it!)
It is a fine dry day here...no thunderstorms!

Ah!!
That explains why it is not in Elle's Chambers.
She has the incomplete one.

Looking at the Time Schedule, the riders should reach the Grottes
sometime around 2.10/2.15 pm - give or take.

Elle, perhaps you might like to switch to Le Tour around that
time to see something of Lascaux? Unless it clashes with a crucial
moment in your match?

Good afternoon, Rusty!
Yes, you are quite right, the word must be one of the 500 missing from my ill fated 13th edition!
I have a print-out somewhere of the missing 500 words...I shall unearth it and duly check for "sphairistike".
There is very little tennis in action.
It is raining very hard, both here and in Wimbledon!
I think the only play will be that on the covered Centre Court.
At the moment, Novak is playing there.
He is one set up, and it's five games all.
I shall maybe look in on the Caves - it all depends on the tennis tension!

Hello, Pigale!
The only tennis is on Centre Court....all other matches are suspended due to the heavy rain we are all getting!
The plus side is that it is very much cooler!

Hope you have not missed it - I made a mistake and forgot to tell
you that I meant French Time!

Did the British TV show/mention anything of interest?

ITV4 did talk about it. I didn't realise that people are allowed into the actual cave again; I thought visitors juts saw a replica. Is it correct? I assume that numbers allowed in are very limited.
