Hi, Rusty!
I just checked on Google, and the Sunday Trading Act only affects England and Wales, not Scotland.
I don't know why that should be?
Our Sainsburys opens again tomorrow morning : 8am - 9pm all weekdays; 7am -8pm on Saturdays and 11am - 5pm on Sundays.
Those hours seem to meet most people's needs.
I have now read the article in the Sunday Times by David Walsh about Paula Radcliffe.
It strikes me as being a little odd......and perhaps a tad unfair?
I think Paula calls it how she sees it?
As far as I am aware, she has always been strongly against doping in sport.
As for her being against this move to nullify all sporting World Records prior to 2005....well, can you really blame her?
Such a move would make a mockery of so many athletes' life work and ambitions.
I know that it is now being proven that a lot of such records are "false" because of being drug- inspired, but for those athletes who have "played it straight", such a decision must surely prove heart-breaking?
Where will all this end?
or maybe it will be forever ongoing.........?

Hello, Elle!
There are quite a few differences up here.
For whatever reason we have larger juries.
15 folk as against 12 for you.
I have always been slightly suspicious of Paula, and as time goes on and no other woman coming near her record, my suspicions grow.
Is she one who has asthma?
I do, however, feel sorry for Marita Koch and the East Germans.
They were doped and had no say in the matter.
I remember seeing the East German swimmer, Kornelia Ender, and her shoulders were just incredibly huge.
She won numerous golds but became suspicious of the huge muscle gain and correctly concluded that it was the stuff her coaches were giving her and telling her it was vitamins etc.
She refused any more treatments and was thrown off the East German team by the Marxist authorities.
The East German athletes have my sympathies.
It is difficult to best know the way forward with these records.
And are they really so important, anyway?

Hi, Rusty!
No, the World Records are perhaps not important in the general scheme of things........but I suspect they matter greatly to those who participated in the making of them.
Ah well, we can do little about it except sympathise where necessary - and maybe condemn in certain instances?
It is all getting out of hand though.......
I have started reading the tales of Miss Beckwith / Peckwitt!
I am enjoying settling in to life on a Scottish isle.........
I can see I shall definitely enjoy her books!
Right, I must ring my cousin.....I am thinking it is my turn.

Hello, Elle!
I had a notion you would take to Miss Peckwitt!
And Morag and Ruari!
Would you like to know where exactly she is...or not?
I have ordered the Second Hebridean Omnibus.
Yes, there will never be a satisfactory solution to these old records.
Solomon himself would struggle to sort things out in a fair manner.
And it gets no better.
This week the Tour of Italy started, and on day one, two riders were thrown out for failing a dope test.
I do not remember any East German failing a test, but they were rigorously tested before leaving Germany for competitions.
The Stasi made sure of that and that whatever they had been on was no longer detectable.
There is a tale by a great Canadian female swimmer (forgotten who!) who turned up at a swimming competition and the East German women had the dressing room next door.
The Canadians were convinced they were next to men, from the deep unnatural voices the German girls had.
Yes, best phone your cousin!

Hi, Rusty!
I have had my usual weekly hour's "chat" with my cousin, and have caught up on all the North - Westerly news!
All are well.
Miss Peckwitt says that she has gone to the tiny Hebridean village of Bruach, on the Isle of Skye.
So where is she really then?
Yes, do tell me.......and how did you find out?
I had forgotten that you were going to watch the Tour of Italy this afternoon..........
How did it go?
I'm giving in over my final Everyman parsing
13d: Satisfaction following start of unusually fast, gripping movie (10)
Answer is: fulfilment = satisfaction (def)
I can see " L-men " for movie ?
Does "fit" mean "gripping"?
Help! I'm stuck!
I'm going to make some coffee - and maybe have a couple of potato cakes.
( Do you like potato cakes?)

Hello, Elle!
Glad all is well with your cousin in the North!
Bruach is a name Miss Peckwitt invented for her tales.
It was Elgol, on Skye, that she landed.
Elgol is Bruach.
If you would like to see some fine snaps of Elgol, go to "Undiscovered Scotland" website, and type in Elgol.
I think you will like it.
Your clue appears to be,
"f" for following, start of "u"nusually, fast is "Lent", and movie is "film",
giving "fulfillment".
"Gripping" in the clue means the word "film" is in the middle of the rest of the word, somewhere.
I like potato scones.
Are they the same thing?

Apologies, Elle.
I misspelled "fulfilment"!

Hello, Elle, again!
I should have said earlier that there are quite a few clips of Elgol on YouTube.

Hi, Rusty!
I have had a quick look at Elgol; I shall go back to Google later, and look again - and longer next time.
What wonderful untamed countryside, and sea views.
It is good to have an image in one's head when reading the book.
I made a mess of that clue!
I had been googling for the name of a film containing relevant letters!
I made it far more difficult than it in fact was!
I suppose it was something that I arrived at the answer!
I haven't heard them called potato "scones" but yes, I would imagine that they are the same as potato "cakes"?
One eats them hot spread with butter?

Hello, Elle!
Glad you found Elgol!
Yes, it is a nice part of the world.
Yes, now you can picture where Miss Peckwitt is on her daily wanderings!
Well, my potato (tattie) scones are store bought from ASDA.
i do not heat them but I do put butter on them and they are fine.
You will be much happier now you have the parse for your clue.
It is easy to get an idea into your head and ignoring something that may be more obvious.
We have all done it!
