And regarding split infinitives, I think there are two schools of thought....
I guess a lot depend son how rigidly one was taught "grammar" at school and what sticks in one's mind!

Thank you for the advice etc regarding the book I asked about.
I have just ordered a Wordsworth Classic edition of "Three Men In a Boat, and Three Men on a Bummel" from eBay, good condition, £2.04 inc post & packing.
Two books in one! I am pleased!
I had cataracts removed from my eyes a few years ago and after that my optician said I had 20:20 vision.
I would have went with the Eggheads answer, but mine would have been a guess, just by ruling the other two out.
Now... I wonder what a Bummel is!

Rusty, if I remember correctly, Jerome does not explain the meaning of "bummel" until the end of the book?
(Have I got that right, Chris? it is a very long time since I read the book)
It is a German word - but it does appear in Chambers.
I shall leave it to you, Rusty, whether or not you find out the meaning or whether you leave tit to JK Jerome to tell you!

I wondered if Bradford's would have it, but no.
She has "dander" but no "bummel".
I am doing my neighbourly nurse a favour tomorrow.
She is working and is getting a carpet laid, so I will let the carpet lads in and let them get on with it.
Means an early dash to ASDA, though!

Very nice young man and he did a fine job.

I have an interesting snippet about my neighbour.
She used to live in my house before I moved here.
This was her parents house when she was a young girl.
She moved in next door about 4/5 years ago.
A perfect neighbour.
She often has her granddaughters staying when she is not working.
They are aged two and five!

I dusted down (yes, literally dusted) my Dad's cooy of "Three men in a boat" and am now at page 36 where they board the boat at Kingston. I was in Kingston earlier this week and how things have changed (not for the better)

For some reason I had assumed that it was your family home where you had brought up your sons........no reason for this, it was just in my head!
Good neighbours are great to have! We are very lucky with ours.
Especially our immediate neighbour, where we are friends with all his family!
He himself is much older than us, but his son and daughter are our age!
And we have known them all (and their families) for about forty years!

I have always intended to read "Three Men and a Boat" ever since I lived a stone's throw from where Jerome K. Jerome once lived. I think the place was called Cookham Dean, though I'm not sure. Only stayed there 6 months, the landlady did not like gentlemen callers even though it was completely self-contained accomodation and I was in my mid twenties! Have just bought 3 MIAB!
I only kept a few of my father's books- Diary of a Nobody, 1066 and all That, The Specialist, Scarlet Feather. And of my uncle's books, Rumer Godden's The Greengage Summer. She is one magnificant writer.
What has anyone kept from childhood?
