Hello, Elle!
My tea was smashing!
Dreadful what happened to Cudjo and his fellow countrymen and women..
Millions enslaved in Africa.
Cudjo is a good man and very intelligent.
Yes, the research is impressive.
I remember little about Hawaii.
Now, "Alaska", I do remember!
The British girls are through to the final of the team pursuit.
One of them has a first name I have never come across before.
Manon Lloyd. A Welsh girl. Manon is not in Chambers.
Possibly a Welsh name?

Hi, Rusty!
I am glad you enjoyed your tea!
I have looked up "Manon" - it is a name I have never come across before.
According to Google, it is a French form of Madeline and a nickname for Marie.
However, it is also given as Welsh language girl's name meaning "wished - for child".
I think that is a very nice reason for being called "Manon", don't you?
This is the quietest evening we have had all the week regarding firework "noise" - it must be something to do with the heavy rain!
The dog must be relieved! She has been edgy every evening!
Tomorrow night will be the worst , I expect!
Mind you, the boys are all looking forward to the bonfires and fireworks!

Hi Elle an Rusty,

Just a quick appearance to say that Manon is quite a common girl's first name - I mean common as 'Manon' itself, and not as a form of Madeleine, nor a nickname for Marie (Which I have never heard mentioned before!)

Thank you , Pigale!
They do say one should never believe all that one reads on the Internet!
Do you have the meaning?
Is it the same as the one I found for the Welsh version of the name?
I thought that was rather nice!

Hello, Elle,
No fireworks here, thankfully!
Good info from you and Pigale regarding Manon.
I have found out a smidgeon more.
She is definitely Welsh and guess what?
She becomes 20 tomorrow.
So, winning tonight with the other girls in her team would be a great present for her.
They look very young!
Up and coming Trottys!

Hello, Elle!
Yahoo!
Great ride by Team GB girls!
They beat Italy in the final.
They were behind most of the way but the Italians disintegrated over the last few laps and the British girls hammered home!
Well done, Manon and teammates!
Very encouraging for the future!

Hi, Rusty!
The rain has stopped and the fireworks have started in full force........the dog is very agitated!
She is crammed behind the computer desk as I type this!
I do feel sorry for her!
That is great news about the young cyclists in Team GB!
Well done all!
We are doing well, are we not - up and coming young cyclists, plus a goodly troupe of young athletes in both field and track events!
Much to look forward to, as you say!
My eyes are becoming tired...I think it must be the new prescriptions..... I suppose it will take a while to become used to the change.
Coffee might help? psychologically if nothing else!

Hi again,

Found a little more info on Manon;
Originally derived from Myriam, (which is of hebraic origin)

BUT, and this is probably where the confusion arises, Manon's saint day is on the 15th August, which she shares with Marie; Sainte Marie on August 15 is a Religious fete day in France because it celebrates Virgin Marie.

You may not know it, but all first names have a Saint Day in France.

Also, the Provence writer Marcel Pagnol wrote a book 'Manon des Sources' (known in English as Manon of the Spring) in the first half of 20th Century.

End of Lesson!!!!

Hello, Elle,
The men's pursuit team have won gold, too!
All youngsters in the team.
I am hearing that GB took no women sprinters to Glasgow.
No idea why.
Come back Victoria!
You are missed!

It is good to have new talent coming up "through the ranks"
They are the future!!
The fireworks have finally died down........I may at last be able to persuade the dog out into the garden before bed!
