Well, I am all right with the first part of the clue?
stil(l) mostly quiet

ton ("not" reversed)
and I get stilton = cheese = I have a place on the (cheese) board.
But I think the second half of the clue is clumsy?
On the other hand it was easy enough (but then you had given me the crossers)
Although I think I would have got it anyway.
But not the "smoothest" clue?
I don't think I'll venture any further!
I shall see what Pentaquod is up to.....................

To me, a Stilton cheese is an inanimate object.
Not an "I".
"I" is a personal pronoun, I think it is called.
If the clue said, "it has a place on the board", it would do.
But never "I".
Standards are falling!
But, you parsed it perfectly well.
What do you make of Chesapeake and the werowance?

Yes, I see what you mean about cheese being an inanimate object.
But I have seen this inappropriate personalisation (using "I") before in crosswords.
Now ""Chesapeake"....
It began easier than did "Centennial" - I found that initial chapter of Centennial hard to grasp - my having to read some of the descriptions more than once?......
But I cannot as yet see where the story of "Chesapeake" is going?
I have just concluded the First Voyage., but have not ventured further yet.......
I do not know how it will develop....I am wondering whether maybe it follows the lives of different leaders (werowances)?
However, I shall as the story progresses........
(But do not tell me!)

Your story will progress with the arrival of the people who eventually populate the land and marshes along the Choptank.
There are strong women characters in the tale.

I can just see myself as a pioneer!
I have been wrapping the presents I have bought for our granddaughter, her new half brother, and their mum.
We are going a-visiting tomorrow morning!
Not only shall we meet the new baby, we have yet to see their new living accommodation, as they have very recently moved house.

Elder daughter has just been on the phone - they are on holiday in Northumberland., over the half term holiday week.
They are having a good time, although unfortunately the weather is not great.
They are by the beach.
