The answer is 'Charlotte Bronte' = novelist (def)
Can someone please explain the rest?

re post 7, I'm assuming volcano = etna has something to do with it?

CHART (plan) around LOT (group - weakest part, I think), EBRO (Portuguese River) and ETN(a) (volcano nearly upwards - volcano is almost always ETNA in crosswords)

Just checked - the Ebro is Spanish, not Portuguese
