Still can't see how my answer to 4d, which is synonymous with the last two in the clue, and goes 2,1,4 (therefore 7 letters not 6), can be arrived at by removing a synonym for "section" from the first two words. Am I barking up the wrong **** ???!!!
(contd.) for Jolan & others who may not have the clue, the NORMAL clue goes:
"Plant reputed to be dangerous getting rid of section, in difficulties" (6, three words) (BUT THERE ARE SEVEN CELLS AVAILABLE!!!)
There is a gremlin at work here. The answer (2,1,4) needs to be entered normally to fill all seven cells available. Oh, and Chambers gives S = Section.
One really final q. : can anyone parse 14a completely? Letters 3 to 6 as an anagram of 1 wd in clue? Don't quite see it!
As for the "grid is better without...", I'm now assuming that's just a confirmation of what we've now done, but I may be wrong. Anyone?
