A Bluenose is a supporter of Everton F.C. I ask because Gwladys Street Is the end of Goodison Park where the most fervent supporters congregate.

Thank you for your support Chrise, but I must apologise.
Rambler, looking again , my comment is so pompous that you were right to chide me. When I started to do crosswords, years ago, my Bible was "The ABC of Crosswords" by Alec Robins. I remember him saying once that the most irritating of clues were those that depended on pronunciation, and I agreed.
Bernie, I assumed that you were charging me with being a Puritan My partner. who seems to favour a team of small Spanish men playing something called ticky tocky, or some such, is the sports buff in the family so I shall ask about these "Bluenoses".

Chambers has two pronunciations.

Basque /bäsk/ long a, as in grass
..... and /bask/ short a, as in bad

bask /bäsk/

Then again, in North America "grass" is pronounced /græss/

Oops! Football is not to be joked about in this household. My better half tells me that "the small Spaniards" play for Barcelona, which is, apparently, the best team in the world, and they play a tikki-takka style. I am also advised that should I start supporting a team I could do worse than cheer for Everton because "at least they play football too." Hm. We shall see.
