Hi jazzy and elle. Not sure how "universal" this is but with the android operating system the Google keyboard gives the "usual' accent options eg grave, acute, circumflex tilde etc by holding the requisite letter, and the various options appear and simply depress the required one.

I will have to see what my keyboard offers. Thanks Ginge. Meanwhile, I have a "dictation" key where you talk into the ipad and it shows the result. It just came up with "shaka and some good". :(
