Thank you mattrom, a good word to clue . I tried a few ways to get "bronx cheer" into it but failed,
Was always going to go with Chuck Berry, I used to have a well-worn copy of Johnny B. Goode on the Chess label... Well you didn't think I'd admit to My Ding-A-Ling did you?

croak - rasp
like a frog(French) hat(beret) gathered(homophone indicator) for berry

Doesn't quite work because I overegged it to include Prince, alluding to raspberry beret.
