fit your answers in where they fit.
you can enter the 3,10 one str away the I think 5a only had 1 position, then just trial and error until you fit all your answers in the grid

Thank you S. I assumed that was probably what was intended but could not reconcile it with the numbered clues. Are the numbers not an indication of the position of the entries? If not, what is their purpose?

the numbers come into effect when your grid is full and you have the 3 sentence instruction (actually the last 2 of the downs do go in the last 2 places)

I am now wondering what other people are seeing in the completed grid. I see the straight lines as representing two of the architectural features mentioned in the theme word. The highlight ed cells don't have a shape, but connect the tips of the two features, thus making the synonym apt.
What about everyone else?

There is also the horse racing connection between the theme word, the title and the highlighted cells which makes the synonym apt.
