But you will only find DUKW in Chambers under the 4th entry for "duck", presumably because that is how it was pronounced (in my youth, at least).
Have now found the first extra jumble in 11ac - "deer I", fairly obvious. I suspect the others are better hidden.

OK barreter - I suppose that that was how it was pronounced.
I remember seeing them practising on Instow beach (North Devon) when I was young.

barretter, I think 1A and 40 are just words for unsuccessful outcomes, to contrast with 3 and 39 which are examples of prizes which might be won.

There was also a question about where the jumbled items were. They are in 11, 26, 31, 7, 20 and 34.

I suppose the birds themselves are a bit "amphibious" - not really! They certainly brighten up the streams round here. Found the next "extra jumble" in 31ac, last three words.

23ac is a slang term for a medal.
40ac is one of the recipients of an extra letter.
