I don't see the point of the last sentence of the preamble if it is optional . Are we therefore expected to do this highlighting?

So 25d - I have the performer and the right colour of pencil but the 2 unchecked letters elude me. Be grateful for some help.

One of the unchecked letters is actually two, as per the preamble. It finishes off the thematic bit.
