For the life of me I cannot see the answer to 3 across. I have everything else completed and I have the sextet and theme but I'm fixated on 3a being an anagram of (p)ans metal. Can anyone give me a hint please?

Yes, 3 A is an anagram - it just refers to each of the sextet, what they(the words) are. Hope this is of some help - I find it hard to give hints.
