I'm stuck on 1d and suspect that I have gone astray with S???TOOTHSAWS. Hint or help will be appreciated+

Your letters are correct. Skiptoothsaws (Skipto(n) and anagram of the other letters, 'whats so'.

PS. It's normally better to give the clue.
